You know, as a kid I was a bit of a stoic loner myself, so I really identified with the Silver Surfer...you know I'm a big tennis fan...especially from 1980 through 2003-ish...still a fan...but anyway, did I love the passion of Conners, the fire of McEnroe, the playfulness of Yannick Noah? Nope, for me...it was Ivan Lendl, who for most other people was as dull as the sawdust he carried around in his pocket...but that's the kind of kid I was.

So I've followed the Silver Surfer storyline for most of my life...I know where I'll be next weekend...I don't care even if the movie stinks like a bag of rotten tomatoes with week old fish...I'm still seeing it!

I can understand that...

My favorites growing up were Spider-Man (somewhat), Hank McCoy / Beast and Thor...

BTW, check out www.marvel.com for some pretty cool Silver Surfer wallpapers...

Haven't been checking this page the last month or so...been thinking about what direction and theme I want to go with this...but to answer the question...

...ummmm, it wasn't as bad as some critics made it out to be...they prefer darker comic adaptations like Batman Begins and X-Men...but I think the FF are a lighter, family-friendly type franchise.

What disappointed me will probably be of no consequence to non-Surfer/non-comic devotees...for starters, the Silver Surfer's powers in the movie are drawn from his board...this is not true to the comic...his silver coat of "galactic glaze", given to him by Galactus, absorbs ambient cosmic energy which he uses as "The Power Cosmic." Now, it has been said many times in the comics that the board and the Surfer are "as one"...but even when not in contact with his board, he is still the Silver Surfer and still powerful...he can even use his cosmic powers to fly without his board (as he did when Ego the Living Planet kept his board away from him).

To me, it's an important distinction and one I hope they'll change if the Surfer gets his own movie...otherwise, it's the board, not the Surfer himself, who is powerful...find a way to separate him from his board and he's done by that scenario...just call the movie...The Silver Surfboard.

The other thing I didn't like was the portrayal of Galactus. We never see him...the story is the movie studio didn't want a giant humanoid Galactus...but this is a comic book movie, not reality...giants work in sci-fi movies...look at Transformers...it just depends on how you do it...in fact, I read the effects team had to beg the studio to put in a shadow that resembled Galactus' helmet (you can see the shadow when the Surfer confronts Galactus), but that's all the studio would allow. So many fans hated this portrayal of Galactus...I heard people complaining about it as I left the theater (all three times I saw the movie). But as Chris Rock has said, even if you came to studio executives with Citizen Kane, they'd find a way to mess it up. Again, if there is a Surfer movie, there had better be a real Galactus...the shadow inside the cloud formation at least leaves that possibility open.

And if they had left Galactus as he was, the FF could have had a showdown with the big guy that would have been a rip-roaring cosmic battle...and also given the writers an opportunity to either use the Ultimate Nullifier storyline, or even better, try to devise a way for Galactus to be turned away, as the FF plus the Surfer still wouldn't be as powerful as ol' helmet-head.

But instead of a Galactus showdown, they give us Doom again?! Ummm...Doom is a great FF character, but he was already the villain in the first movie! They had the opportunity to have the FF and Surfer vs. Galactus and they did a retread of the first movie.

I know it sounds like I didn't like the movie, but I did...I just felt the studio screwed up by abandoning some of the core appeal of the movie...when the first Surfer FF trailers came out all I read online from fans was...when are we going to see Galactus...well, despite that cosmic cloud formation they gave us, we're still waiting to see Mr. G.

Cool review... Yeah, I didn't like the source of SS's power being wrong either, but oh well... It was fairly close :) Movie was very funny in parts, which I loved, especially with the swapping of powers and such :)

Speaking of Marvel comics coming to movies, check what's been released... The trailer / teaser for Iron Man!

Still warming up to Downey as Stark, but I think I could get used to it...

Hmmmm...I guess one thing Downey has is that, like Tony Stark, he is familiar with substance abuse problems. Another talked about movie that I haven't heard much about lately is an Iron Fist movie...don't know why, but I always liked Iron Fist more that Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung-Fu...liked them both, of course...supposedly Ray Park, Darth Maul in SW: The Phantom Menace, was slated to play Iron Fist...with his wushu background, that would be ok action-wise, but I don't know if he can act...oh wait a minute, this ain't Shakespeare, it's action in the Mighty Marvel way!! LOL!
